Every year, millions of candidates apply for Indian government exams — UPSC, SSC, TNPSC, UPSSSC, Railway, Banking and more. And almost every single one hits the same wall: the photo upload keeps failing.

Signature requirements are just as consistent

The signature is typically 3.5cm × 1.5cm (150 × 60 pixels), 5-20KB, JPG, black ink on white paper. Many candidates nail the photo but get stuck on the signature, because the size and file limits are even tighter. Sign on white paper with black ink, scan or photograph it, crop it, and compress it to the range.

Photo quality rules that apply everywhere

• The photo must be recent and passport-style, with a white or light plain background.
• No scanned copies of older photos, no filters, no heavy editing.

Where the exams actually differ (and where they do not)

• The name on the photo differs from the application form. Portals compare the file name or the details you enter — keep spelling identical.
• The background passed your eye test but failed the automated check. Gradients, shadows and textured walls are the usual culprits. Stand against a plain white wall, away from it.
• The crop clips the head. Keep the full face and hairline inside the frame with a small margin above — a tight crop is an instant reject.
• Flash glare or red eyes. Natural daylight avoids both and gives the cleanest skin tones.
